Burnley’s Nick Pope would not have been a name to be on many people’s list as a contender for the Golden Glove award last season, however he only missed out on the award in their final match of the season.
He pushed Manchester City’s Ederson all the way but the Brazilian managed to pip him to the post, despite Liverpool’s sheer dominance in the Premier League last season. Nonetheless, it is likely he would have been one of the best free tips for many bettors for the 2019/20 campaign and it was one that would have paid off for those who backed it.
Nonetheless, that season is now in the past and the current 2020/21 Premier League campaign is already firmly underway. So, who are the best contenders for the award this time around?
The Manchester City shot-stopper will need to be considered a favourite to win the award once again as he has proven to be incredibly efficient in between the sticks for Pep Guardiola’s side over the years. To date, the Brazilian has already managed to keep an exceptional 52 clean sheets in his 110 appearances, therefore making him extremely difficult to beat.
Another Brazilian, Alisson Becker will have to also be considered to be in contention of winning the award. The Liverpool shot-stopper has been just as remarkable as his compatriot – which is good news for Brazil – and has already been crowned a winner of the award despite just being in the Premier League for two seasons. In that short time, he has kept 35 clean sheets in 69 appearances, whilst Jurgen Klopp’s side have only lost four matches in that time!
Although it will much depend on his Burnley defence, Pope could be in with a shout of going one better than last season. Whilst their 4-2 defeat to Leicester City would not have helped, the shot-stopper will be eager to challenge for a place in Gareth Southgate’s England first-team and with Everton’s Jordan Pickford far from reliable, perhaps Pope will play out of his skin and produce another season of top saves.
Perhaps a dark-horse on this list, however the Crystal Palace goalkeeper could be considered to be one of the most criminally underrated players in the whole of the Premier League. The Spaniard has been excellent for the Selhurst Park outfit since making his switch to England and has started the 2020/21 campaign in fine form as he produced a number of remarkable saves against Southampton in the opening fixture.
