Football is the most popular sport in the world. The game is played by billions across the globe, whether that is recreationally, at an amateur level, or by professionals.
Although football differentiates itself from many other sports, there are similarities with American Football and Rugby. All three of these sports are derived from an original idea with a ball.
Here is a look at these three sports in more detail and how the rules different from football.

American Football is predominantly played in North America, with the USA having the most lucrative professional league in the world in the NFL. The college system in the US helps funnel through players for the 32 franchises across the country. American football is played with 11 players on each team on the pitch. The ball is put into play by a snap from the center, while unlike football, you can’t pass the ball forward. The NFL may look to expand its league in the future with the UK, Canada, and Mexico all being discussed as potential locations for a new team. The UK currently has the international series where the Houston Texans beat Jacksonville Jaguars in the most recent game played in London.
Football, also known as soccer in some countries, is a sport which is hugely popular all over the world. The first set of rules were drawn up in 1848 in England and were known as the Cambridge Rules. Many of these rules still exist today. 11 players feature on each team in a game that lasts for 90 minutes (two 45-minutes halves). Football is played on every continent across the world. The most lucrative leagues are in Europe, and this is reflected in football betting as most of the focus is in Europe. However, this isn’t to say football doesn’t have a major presence in other continents around the world. Football differentiates itself from rugby and American football as the game is predominantly played with the feet. The goalkeeper is the only player which can use their hands.

The origins of rugby union date back to 1823 when William Webb Ellis first took the ball with his hands when he was playing football, thus creating the game of rugby. The name of the sport comes from a town in England where the rules were written. The aim for each team is to get to the end of the field to score a try. In rugby, the team can keep possession for as long as they lose the ball. The pinnacle of the sport is the World Cup which was recently played in Japan and was won by South Africa who beat England in the final. Although it’s not one of the most popular sports in the United States, it continues to grow, with the standard of the national team getting better all the time.
