If there’s a player who has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United, then it is Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho. The club gets linked with players left, right and centre in the transfer window. But only some get special attention- those that the club truly wants. One of those players is Sancho himself.
The saga has been rumbling on for the last few months and while the deal hasn’t witnessed a huge breakthrough or anything, but many do feel that Sancho is perhaps destined to join United in the summer. And in many ways, he will fix United’s issues on the right-wing and allow them to become a regular top-four side.
Daniel James was signed by the club in the summer of 2019 and while he’s had a decent campaign, the Welshman isn’t exactly seen as someone who would elevate the status of the club. He has contributed to nine goals, while playing 28 games. But there have been barren periods for him and he hasn’t scored in the Premier League since scoring against Southampton back in August. The recent 1-1 draw saw him come up with a poor performance. He got into good positions, but wasn’t smart enough to create something from those. This led to United struggling to create from the right-flank. Sancho will change that and make United’s right-wing perhaps the best in the league and bring them closer to Liverpool’s right flank.
Sancho has generated an XG per 90 minutes of 0.43, while coming up with an XA of 0.46. That is very good for a player who is only 20. In all competitions, the Englishman has contributed to 33 goals in just 31 appearances, showing exactly how good he is. His production by XG and XA has gone up from the tallies 0.27 and 0.30 of last season and that is a big indication of what might be to come for him.
He is known to dribble past players and use his pace to brilliant effect. He drags defenders out of position and moves in and out from the wide areas. That is a very unique quality to have in the game. Daniel James’ numbers stand at an XG per 90 minutes of 0.13, with the XA per 90 minutes at 0.17. While that isn’t a bad number for a player that United bought as a reliable option from the bench. He has, in many ways, done his job as he had arrived for just £15 million. The output he has come up with is good enough for the fee he joined for.
Sancho will take attacking burden away from Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who is more of a defensive full-back. But when James struggles, the burden of attacking falls on Wan-Bissaka. But if Sancho comes in, his London-born right-wing partner will only have to do the job of winning the ball back and playing it forward to the 20-year-old.
This will work both ways- Sancho will play to his strength. Wan-Bissaka will only have to do the thing he thrives on- tackling and winning the ball back. James could come off the bench and make an impact.
