The Championship is in for an exciting season with many of the clubs making some top signings. Here are the top 5 players that could impress in the Championship this season.
Tom Ince – Stoke City
The Championship knows all too well about the quality of Tom Ince. The intricate winger has never managed to produce in the Premier League but is undoubtedly a Championship difference maker. Skill, confidence and speed – Ince has all the makings of the perfect winger.
Best known for his spell at Derby, Ince earned a move to the Premier League with Huddersfield after scoring over 10 goals in each of his three seasons with the Rams. Just two years ago, Ince scored 15 goals in all competitions. His move to Huddersfield went as many would have expected…with disappointment. Ince recorded just two goals in the Premier League season and has again taken the unwilling step back to the English second division.
This should, though, not affect the newly announced Stoke City player in the slightest. He will be playing under a manager he knows from his time at Derby County in a League that, on his day, Ince can set alight.
Gil Dias – Nottingham Forest
Nottingham Forest have got people talking during this summer’s transfer window. Perhaps the most interesting signing of them all goes to Dias. He’s joined the East Midlands club on loan from Monaco.
Just 21 years of age, the Portuguese winger has played in both Ligue 1 and the Serie A with Fiorentina, as well as representing his nation in every youth bracket from U-18’s right through to the U-21’s last year. Standing at 6ft, the attacker is quick, strong and powerful and is sure to unsettle wing-backs this season.
Oliver McBurnie – Swansea City
At the early age of 22, McBurnie has had quite the football league experience. In fact, he has featured in every League from the conference right up to the Premier League, with his best scoring season being his most recent in the Championship. Last season on loan at Barnsley, McBurnie scored 9 goals in 17 games. He has never been able to establish himself in the Swansea City side but has impressed in pre-season as well as appearing in the Scottish senior squad for the first time this year.
McBurnie is expected to get a lot more game time this season and will undoubtably get better service at Swansea than he did Barnsley. The striker will be hoping to achieve double figures at least and may play a pivotal role in Swansea’s imminent return to the Premier League.
Jay Rodriguez – West Bromwich Albion
There is an abundance of quality in the recently relegated West Brom side. Jay Rodriguez’s career would perhaps look a lot different now, if he hadn’t been plagued with injuries throughout his frustrating football career.
But the winger looks to be back to full fitness and ready for (hopefully) a full season. Rodriguez is a Premier League player, no doubt, and impressed in the latter stages of their season for West Brom. From the years 2010-12 that Rodriguez spent in the Championship with Burnley, he scored 29 goals. He has only improved and matured since then as he will look to prove this coming season.
Jack Marriott – Derby County
The former Peterborough striker conquered League One in some style and will now be looking to pick up where he left off in the Championship with his new club, Derby County. The Rams lacked a regular out-and-out striker last season and left much of the goal scoring to the man in behind, Matej Vydra.
In Marriott, they have gained a striker who is exactly what they have been looking for. He was the top scorer in League One last year with a staggering 27 goals in 44 games—33 in all competitions. It would come as no surprise if the step-up did not affect the 23-year-old.
