According to a recent report by The Daily Telegraph, Chelsea have added Barcelona striker Ousmane Dembele’s name on their transfer shortlist for the upcoming January transfer window.
It is understood that the Blues manager Frank Lampard is looking to add more quality to his squad and has identified the La Liga striker as an option to lead the charge at West London (via The Daily Telegraph).
As expected, Dembele’s reputation means Chelsea would not be the only side interested in his services come January. Spanish news-site Eldesmarque has also reported that Dembele’s agent, Moussa Sissoko, has “met with executives from Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Manchester City”.
Regardless of the competition, Chelsea seem to be heavy favourites to land the Frenchman – if Barcelona are willing to offload him in January, and you can take advantage of these bookmaker offers to bet on where you feel Dembele will be playing once the window slams shut.
Do Chelsea need a new winger?
Tammy Abraham has been Lampard’s main striker this season, and to his credit, the English centre-forward has taken his opportunities, scoring a lot of goals for his team so far. However, he needs more help up top as both Michy Batshuayi and Oliver Giroud have struggled to make an impact at Stamford Bridge during this campaign.
Frankly speaking, Chelsea have lacked any real threat from the flanks of late and it is understandable to see if Lampard is looking to secure a player with an Hazard-esque threat on the flanks.
Dembele could be a brilliant coup for Chelsea if they can find a way to lure him to England next month. He is good enough to secure a regular starting berth in Lampard’s first XI and will also provide more competition for Abraham up top.
Dembele and his recent frustrations at Barcelona
The 22-year-old has endured a frustrating season at the Nou Camp, scoring just once in nine appearances under Ernesto Valverde’s stewardship on all fronts. Dembele has also played for France in 21 international matches and has registered two goals for his country thus far (Transfermarkt).
However, he is currently out of action with a hamstring problem and that has been a recurring theme from his time at the club.
What does the French attacker bring to the table?
Dembele is one of the quickest players in the Spanish top-flight. He can use his pace to make some clever runs behind the opposition backline. The French talent also excels at linking up play with others around him. However, he has struggled to find consistency in terms of goal-scoring since his big move to the Nou Camp in the summer of 2017.
Is Dembele the right choice for the Blues?
Lampard needs to find a long-term replacement for Willian, who is set to become a free agent next summer. Dembele could prove to be a perfect replacement for the Brazilian playmaker as he is young and will add a lot of quality to the Chelsea first-team.
As long as Dembele can stay injury-free, he has all the attributes to be a future star for the Pensioners if he ends up making a switch to Stamford Bridge this winter.
