Aubameyang answers questions in live chat, raises even more
I woke up yesterday thinking that this seemed like it was about time to see what Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had been up to lately. Apparently the Borussia-Dortmund striker was thinking the same thing.
Just over 2 weeks remain in the summer transfer window. Despite continuing rumors last year’s Bundesliga golden boot winner remains with BVB. Indeed, Aubameyang scored a signature chip for his current club in last week’s DFL Supercup. It wasn’t enough to carry the day, but it did give Dortmund’s faithful hope that he was not through playing hero at Signal Iduna.
Yesterday, in a live Q&A with fans over his Instagram account however, Aubameyang seemed to revive all of the rumors with just a few words. “They are sleeping,” he said, apparently referring to the management of AC Milan. Milan are one of the major clubs to which the Gabon striker has existing ties.
Former clubs, former coaches…
Aubameyang was with Milan for the first few years of his career. But he played zero official matches at the San Siro. Having come up through France as a young player he was perpetually on loan there in his time with the Italian club.
But returning to Milan is not Aubameyang’s only option should he choose to revisit his past. When he first arrived at Dortmund, Jürgen Klopp was manager. The player has often made clear the significant impact his former coach had on his development as a professional.
Klopp left in 2015. He has spent the last two years returning Liverpool FC to “top 4” status in the EPL. Many of the summer rumors surrounding Aubameyang’s impending separation from BVB have concerned a reunion between he and Klopp at LFC. Brazil’s Philippe Coutinho has been a cornerstone of Liverpool’s recent revival. Coutinho himself has most recently deflected any suggestion that he would be moving to Barçelona to supplant his countryman, Neymar Jr.’s, recent departure.
In either case, reinforcements would be welcome as Klopp looks to compete in both the EPL and Champions League this year. And Aubameyang’s contribution might be sufficient to bring Liverpool a trophy or two.
…and former rumors too
Of course this has been a busy summer for all concerned. There’s not been a moment’s respite for even last year’s champions. In that vein, Antonio Conte and his Chelsea side are barely two-and-a-half months out from winning the EPL. They have already lost their game on matchday 1 and have had little but turmoil since that day in May.
About a month ago as well it appeared that Aubameyang was part of the solution to all of Conte’s problems. At least he made it seem so. Multi-million pound figures were kicked around and it seemed to be what both sides wanted.
But that rumor subsided. Now that Chelsea are facing the music, however, the thought could reoccur. And the rumours could resurface.
Two weeks and three days is a long time in world football. Much too long a time to be caught napping at any rate.
